This has been the first week in my new year and i have to say it is going rather well. there has been a lot happening and it hasn’t been hard work, which is usually a sign that this is the way things need to be going.
Small boy is slowly increasing the amount of ‘formal’ education he is doing – [formal meaning that it is quite obvious that its educational as apposed to the rest of the fun and creative ways we do things] I had a slight panic at the start of the week due to an email from the LEA requesting a full report or our plans & examples of his work. if you are not aware of how home education works in the UK the LEA do not actually have any legal standing in doing this, you do not have to let them into your home etc but i choose to liaison with them and have a good open relationship with them. I am lucky in the fact that the lady i deal with is lovely, understood right from the start why i decided to go down this path not to mention being ok with the un-schooling being undertaken. A lot of people presume that the sitting down as you do at school is the ‘right way’ to learn and that this is of course the only way we should do things. i myself struggle at times with the actual thought of not just thinking outside the box but forgetting there was a box there in the first place. I do feel that the sitting down and learning has its place and so we created “workbook Wednesday” a day where he can choose which subject he does and works from the LETTs books independently. This week he successfully completed 25 pages of english, un aided. He had a little ‘moment’ when he realised that he had missed out two pages and that he would have to go up and do the parts he has missed but other than that it went brilliantly. This time last year was a completely different story with so much heart ache and to think of how it was then to where we are now i couldn’t be prouder of my not so small boy. I replied to the LEA, included the information she asked for, explained how i am approaching home education and she is more than happy for us to carry on the way we are. Unless i require her assistance the next contact will be in the spring.
My new daily routine is coming a long nicely, i have not written it down yet as there are still some bits and pieces I am working through and tweaking. To some of my friends the thought of me writing down and following a routine seems odd, not to ‘fit in’ with my lifestyle in general but i think people underestimate the need for routine at time. routines need not be boring, restrictive or mundane. A routine is simply a guide to your daily life, that helps keep you focused on the important things in life and with the many things i have going on mixed with where i want my life to head sitting down and just letting things happen is quite lazy and isn’t going to get me anywhere. Time to take hold of the proverbial reigns, load the cart and take control over the journey. I accept that there are things i can not control so we shall weather the weather whether we like it or not and when it rains we shall splash in the puddles and concentrate on the rainbows that follow after…….. [was that ‘far too hippie’ for first thing on a Saturday? i think not ;P]
My bath is calling me, I have quite a busy day ahead of me and I’m cold to the bone. time to lush up and warm up
Ohhhhh and i might be writing a book soon on food and cooking!!
